The Idea Behind Project 1602

Anthony Morales

I created Project 1602 as a space to think seriously and write carefully about economics, law, markets and the ideas that shape modern life.

I am a student of Economics and Political Science at Providence College, and I am interested in how institutions form, how they function, and how they influence our modern world. This platform is a way for me to develop clarity through writing, studying complex systems and to approach prominent ideas with socratic thinking and humility.

The name Project 1602 refers to the founding of the Dutch East India Company, an event often cited as the beginning of modern capitalism and organized capital markets. That moment marked a turning point in how we value, trade, govern, and structure economic and political power. While this platform is not confined to a single ideology or system, the name serves as a reminder that ideas and institutions endure and that choices matter.

Project 1602 is intentionally independent to foster critical thought, explore how economic systems operate, how legal and political institutions evolve, and how philosophical ideas continue to shape the institutions that govern. At its core, this project is for my generation to learn about the ideas that form the greatest experiment in the world, the American republic. I want to help others understand ideas, think critically about the systems we will inherit, and what the economic outlook will be as we step into adulthood. Many classical western political thinkers understood that an educated and active political body was the best check against aristocratic power, and as Americans we have a duty to educate ourselves, inform others, and continue to foster free and critical thinking.
